Where do you park the removal truck? Parking, permits and access in Sydney

Everyone plans the packing. Almost nobody plans the parking. Then the truck arrives at eight on a Saturday, the only usable stretch of kerb outside the building is occupied by a hatchback that has not moved since Thursday, and two removalists you are paying by the hour begin their day carrying your life sixty metres up a hill.

This is the part of a Sydney move that goes wrong quietly. It does not ruin the day so much as add two hours and a great deal of swearing to it. Here is how to sort it properly, council by council, from the Harbour Bridge up to Palm Beach.

Do you need a permit to park a removal truck in Sydney?

Not to park. To reserve. A removal truck can use any legal parking space like any other vehicle, and no permit is required to sit in one. The trouble is that on most residential streets across the North Shore and Northern Beaches there is no legal space long enough for a truck, and nothing at all stops a neighbour taking the one good spot at seven in the morning.

That is what a permit buys. Councils issue temporary parking permits, variously called a works zone, a temporary no-parking zone or a removalist permit, which let you reserve a stretch of kerb for your move. You apply, you pay a fee, the council approves the location, and signs go up in advance so the space is legally yours on the day.

Which council do you apply to?

Our service area spans six councils, and each runs its own permit system with its own form, fee and notice period.

Search the council name along with works zone or temporary parking permit and you will land on the right form. Fees and notice periods differ across all six and they change from year to year, so take those numbers from the council itself rather than from a blog post, including this one.

How far ahead should you apply?

As soon as you have a confirmed date. A fortnight is a common minimum, several councils want longer, and everything slows down over school holidays and across the last week of the month, which is precisely when most leases end and most people move.

If your move is inside a week and you have not applied yet, ring the council rather than filling in the online form. There is often a faster path for short notice, and the person who answers will tell you honestly whether you are going to make it.

Book the lift before you book anything else

If you are moving out of an apartment, the lift booking is the real constraint and the parking has to fit around it. Strata will usually give you a window of two or three hours, sometimes against a bond, and frequently not on a Sunday at all.

So the order matters. The lift window sets the truck time, and the truck time sets the hours you ask the council to reserve. Apply for the permit before the lift is confirmed and there is a fair chance you will have reserved the wrong morning.

What if the truck cannot park outside?

The move still happens. It just costs you time, and time is exactly what you are paying removalists for. The number that matters is carry distance: the walk between the tailgate and your front door.

Twenty metres is nothing. Sixty metres uphill, with a kerb and a flight of steps at the end, changes the shape of the entire day. On a two-bedroom move that is roughly forty round trips with cardboard cartons, because one person carries one carton, or two if they are feeling brave.

The streets that catch people out

Some local knowledge, from doing this every week.

• Mosman and Balmoral: narrow, steep and parked out. The streets running off Military Road are the tightest, and a large truck sometimes cannot turn at all, which means reversing the length of the street in front of an audience.
• Manly back streets: resident permit parking almost everywhere, and in summer the beach traffic builds from mid-morning. An eight o'clock start is a completely different job to an eleven o'clock one.
• Avalon, Bilgola and Palm Beach: steep driveways, and no shortage of houses where the front door sits a flight of steps below the road. Send your removalists photos before they quote, not on the day.
• Frenchs Forest and Belrose: the easiest run in our area. Wide streets, real driveways, room to turn. If you get to choose a moving day, this is where the choice matters least.
• Military Road, Spit Road and Pittwater Road: peak-hour clearways along long stretches. Read the signs properly. A removal truck sitting in a clearway is a tow truck driver's favourite sight.

The times worth avoiding

• School zones, 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on school days. Not illegal to move through, just slow, and every school on the North Shore has a queue.
• The last week of the month, when leases end. Removalists, lifts and council approvals are all at their busiest together.
• Summer weekends on the Northern Beaches. The beach car parks fill from about nine, and every road behind them follows. Moving in Manly or Avalon in January means starting at seven or accepting the traffic.
• Sundays are quieter on the road and clear of most clearways, but plenty of buildings will not allow a lift booking at all. Check before you assume.

A sensible order to do all this in

1. Confirm the moving date at both ends.
2. Ask strata about the lift: hours, duration, bond, dock height. This decides everything downstream.
3. Book the removalists for a window the lift actually allows.
4. Apply for parking permits, at both the old address and the new one if you need them.
5. Book your crates so they land a few days before you want to start packing.
6. Two days out, walk the street and look at where the truck will genuinely sit.
7. On the morning, if you have no permit, put your own car in the space at dawn and move it when the truck arrives.
